Delhi saw a tense protest near India Gate as demonstrators clashed with police while voicing concern over worsening air pollution. Reports say some participants used chilli spray on officers as authorities attempted to clear the area, injuring several personnel.
The Delhi Coordination Committee for Clean Air claims the city’s air quality has entered a severe category and accuses the government of relying on cosmetic measures like water sprinklers, cloud seeding, and proximity monitoring rather than addressing root causes. The group says “When the state makes the air itself poisonous, it becomes necessary for people to unite and raise their voices for their own survival.”
Police said emergency vehicles were blocked as barricades were breached and protesters attempted to block roads. Three to four police personnel sustained injuries during the scuffle as security teams tried to restore order and ensure access for ambulances and medical staff.
Across the city, Air Quality Index readings hovered in the very poor to severe range, with pockets like Bawana reporting readings around 435 and the city's average around 381. Some reports indicate revised GRAP measures shifting to Stage III, enabling work-from-home decisions for government and private offices, underscoring the push for stronger pollution controls.
The protest underscores growing public frustration with Delhi’s air quality and the urgent need for sustained, evidence-based actions to curb pollution rather than cosmetic fixes.
