Mr Saturday Delivers: Russell Dominates Azerbaijan GP!
George Russell snatches a thrilling win at the Azerbaijan GP, declaring it his "most dominant weekend". Discover how 'Mr Saturday' pushed past a tough season to beat Max Verstappen and reignite his title hopes!
George Russell has celebrated a significant victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, describing it as "the most dominant weekend I've had in my career." This win feels like a true vindication for the Mercedes driver, who admitted to coming through a "real tough period" in the current Formula 1 season. Russell's triumph in Baku marks his first win in seven races, a period during which his teammate Kimi Antonelli has secured three victories, bringing his season tally to eight.
This win, Russell's third of the season, comes at a crucial time, offering a much-needed boost after Antonelli had largely dominated the championship, effectively crushing Russell's early title aspirations. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix was a nail-biter, with Russell fending off a late challenge from Red Bull's Max Verstappen in what was described as one of the closest finishes in F1 history.
The race, unusually held on a Saturday, saw Russell lead from pole position, living up to his 'Mr Saturday' nickname, earned for his exceptional qualifying prowess. While Russell enjoyed a faultless weekend, Antonelli, who had been a seemingly unstoppable force, experienced what he called his "worst weekend of the year." After losing half of the practice time on day one and making a costly mistake in qualifying that saw him start 16th, Antonelli finished fifth.
He conceded that his "mindset was not in the best place" and that he "wasn't really present," focusing instead on damage limitation rather than full attack. This outcome significantly tightens the championship race.
Russell's win, combined with Antonelli's fifth place, has reduced the points gap between them from 81 to 66.
While still a substantial margin with seven or eight races remaining, it offers Russell a glimmer of hope that seemed all but extinguished earlier in the season. Russell has faced considerable challenges this year. After dominating the intra-team battle last season, the tables turned dramatically following major rule changes in F1, with Antonelli adapting immediately to the new Mercedes while Russell struggled.
Every step forward for Russell seemed to be met with another setback, including a particularly painful Italian Grand Prix where Antonelli won from 19th while Russell started from the front row. Despite the difficulties, Russell maintained his belief, and in Baku, his persistence paid off. He was on a mission from the moment he hit the track, setting the pace throughout the weekend.
Looking ahead, Russell is focused on his own performance.
If I continue delivering performances like I've done this weekend, no matter what happens towards the end of the season, I'll be happy,
he stated, signaling his determination to fight until the very end.
