As Father's Day approaches, it's time to honor the dads, stepdads, and fathers-in-law in our lives. What better way to get into the celebratory spirit than with a dose of humor from some of comedy's biggest names? Forget the usual ties and cologne; these timeless gags perfectly capture the quirks and joys of fatherhood, often with a playful jab at the holiday itself.
From observations about gift-giving traditions to the perennial comparison with Mother's Day, these comedians offer a relatable and often self-deprecating take on being a dad. Their insights remind us that while fathers play a unique role, a good laugh is always a welcome gift.
Here's a look at what some comedy icons had to say about Father's Day:
Louie Anderson humorously reflected on the disparity between Mother's Day and Father's Day, noting, “I feel bad for Father’s Day because the kids just get him cologne, or tools, or cigarettes, or more cologne.” He even suggested mothers should get “a Mother’s Short Week, or a Mother’s Long Weekend.”
Johnny Carson, ever the wit, mused about the holiday's origin: “Well, Father’s Day is this Sunday. When did Father’s Day start? I think it was started by Hallmark…I think.”
Milton Berle offered a classic punchline about the financial realities, stating, “I can always count on getting one thing for Father’s Day—all the bills from Mother’s Day.”
Lewis Black's sarcastic take included, “Happy Father’s Day to all of you dads. Just had brunch with my two imaginary kids and I had to pay.”
Jerry Seinfeld perfectly summed up the gift-giving conundrum: “Father’s Day is, ‘Oh my God, we forgot about Dad again, let’s buy him a gift that shows him how little we know about him.’ That’s what Father’s Day is.”
Conan O’Brien's modern-day dad wish was simple yet hilarious: “All I want for Father’s Day is for my kids to stop calling me ‘Not-Dwayne-Johnson.’”
Jim Gaffigan poked fun at traditional gifts, saying, “The gifts we give on Father’s Day seem impersonal and absurd. A necktie? What is this, 1950? I guess giving Dear Old Dad a noose would be a little on the nose. So let’s give him a silk noose with a goofy pattern.”
And Norm Macdonald, in his signature style, conveyed a mock forgetfulness: “Oh, f—k, is this Father’s Day? Godd—n it. Now I have to make a call to Canada and have some horseshoe.”
These jokes, while making us laugh, also highlight the endearing, sometimes overlooked, and often understated celebration of fathers. So this Father's Day, share a laugh, appreciate the dads in your life, and perhaps offer a gift that shows you know them a little better than a silk noose.
