Top Boy Actor Micheal Ward Cleared of Rape & Sexual Assault Charges
Actor Micheal Ward, known for 'Top Boy', has been acquitted of rape and sexual assault charges. After a 10-day trial in London, a jury found him not guilty. Get the full story on the verdict.
Micheal Ward, the acclaimed 28-year-old actor best known for his roles in the Netflix crime drama "Top Boy" and Steve McQueen's "Small Axe," has been cleared of all rape and sexual assault charges following a 10-day trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London.
Ward was acquitted of five charges, including two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. The allegations stemmed from an encounter with a woman he met at a New Year’s Day party in Ilford, east London, in 2023. The pair later traveled separately to an after-party in Stratford, where prosecutors alleged the assault took place in the back of a Mercedes after Ward invited the woman into the vehicle.
The complainant, who remains anonymous, testified that she repeatedly indicated her desire to leave and felt intimidated by Ward's fame. She also stated that she delayed reporting the incident to the police, initially blaming herself for what had occurred. Giving evidence, she described being in pain after the alleged assault and believed there was blood on her clothing.
Throughout the trial, Ward vehemently denied the allegations, maintaining that the encounter was entirely consensual. He told jurors that their interactions that evening had been "friendly and flirty" and insisted that the woman had been "a willing participant in everything that was going on." Ward stated, "It was what we wanted. There was mutual interest."
The defence further bolstered Ward's testimony by highlighting forensic evidence that contradicted key aspects of the prosecution's case. Specifically, examinations of the complainant's clothing found no blood, despite her recollection of blood being present on her leggings and underwear. Ward had been arrested later that same month and, in a prepared statement to police, consistently denied the rape allegations.
