A special primary election is underway in South Carolina, as the Republican Party seeks to nominate a candidate to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham last month. The race is drawing significant attention, with several prominent figures in contention.
Leading the pack is Darline Graham, Senator Graham’s younger sister, who was previously appointed on an interim basis by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. Darline Graham brings a background as a disability advocate and formerly served as the commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. Her candidacy has received a major boost from former President Donald Trump, who endorsed her, calling her "a true American Patriot."
However, Graham faces a strong challenge from Ralph Norman, a current congressman and a staunch ally of Donald Trump. Norman is known for having encouraged the former President to declare martial law before Joe Biden’s Inauguration in 2021 and has garnered endorsements from several high-profile MAGA figures, including Senator Mike Lee of Utah and Congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina.
Other notable candidates in the crowded primary field include Russell Fry, also a sitting congressman; Mark Sanford, who previously served as South Carolina Governor and ran for President; and Mark McBride, the former mayor of Myrtle Beach. The winner of this special Republican primary will advance to face pediatrician Annie Andrews, who ran for Congress in 2022, in the general election.
