Rupee rises 42 paise to 91.51 after Budget 2026-27
Rupee firmed to 91.51 per dollar after Union Budget 2026-27, aided by softer oil and RBI defense of 92 per dollar, signaling cautious optimism.
The rupee gained 42 paise to close at 91.51 (provisional) against the U.S. dollar on Monday, a day after the Union Budget 2026-27 was presented. It opened at 91.95, then hit an intraday high of 91.45 and a low of 91.95 before settling at 91.51. Friday had seen a record low of 92.02 before ending at 91.93.
Forex traders said the RBI seemed to defend the 92 per dollar level with resolve. The budget message offered reassurance, not relief, and the government's high borrowing plan for next year—₹17.2 lakh crore to fund a deficit projected at 4.3% of GDP—could weigh on sentiment.
Global factors also played a role as Brent crude eased to around $66.23 a barrel after talks between the US and Iran, while the dollar index hovered at 97.07. The relief in oil prices supported the rupee, despite ongoing fiscal and geopolitical uncertainties.
Analysts from IFA Global described the budget as prudent and focused on continuity, while noting the ultimate path for the currency will depend on diplomacy and macro stability. As volatility subsides, the market will watch for next steps in fiscal consolidation and policy guidance.
