Four European countries — the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain and Slovenia — have announced they will boycott the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest after Israel was cleared to compete. The move comes amid long-running calls to exclude Israel over the war in Gaza and accusations that voting in the contest is unfair. The decision marks a rare disruption in Eurovision’s history and arrives ahead of what would be the festival’s 70th edition.
At a Geneva meeting, delegates pressed for a secret ballot on Israel’s participation, a request organizers reportedly denied. The denial was described as heightening distrust in the festival’s governance and leaving many questions about how the event will proceed with a smaller field next year.
Ireland’s representative broadcaster said participation is unconscionable given the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while Spain’s public broadcaster had pressed for the ballot. The Netherlands and Slovenia cited similar concerns as they announced their non-participation.
