Eight FIRs Filed Over AI-Generated Images of Manikarnika Ghat Redevelopment
Eight FIRs in Varanasi allege AI-created images and misinformation about Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment, targeting communal harmony and religious sentiments.
Eight separate cases have been registered in Varanasi against eight individuals and certain X handles for allegedly spreading AI-generated images and misleading content about the ongoing beautification work at Manikarnika Ghat. The police say the posts presented distorted facts, used imagery linked to Hindu deities, and were intended to hurt religious sentiments and disturb social harmony. The complaints were filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The drive to curb online misinformation comes as volunteers and contractors have been working since November 15, 2025 to strengthen cremation facilities and beautify Manikarnika Ghat. According to officials, a complaint was lodged at Chowk police station by a Tamil Nadu-based businessman identified as Mano, whose company is involved in the project. He said that an X handle posted AI-generated content on the night of January 16, leading to a surge of objectionable comments and reposts that escalated tensions among devotees.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Bansal stated that the authorities have taken legal action against the responsible X handle users as well as those who reposted or commented on the content, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter. Officials noted that the intent appeared to be not only to mislead but also to create an anti-government mindset.
The case underscores the heightened attention to misinformation surrounding the redevelopment of Kashi’s sacred site, with authorities stressing that accuracy and respect for public sentiment will guide the investigation. The Manikarnika Ghat project is part of broader beautification efforts in the area and aims to bolster facilities connected with cremation services, a sensitive and highly visible aspect of the city’s landscape.
