At a rally in Krishnanagar, Mamata Banerjee slammed the Centre over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, saying the Union Home Minister is using the exercise as a political weapon just months before the 2026 assembly polls. She warned that if even a single eligible voter's name is struck off, she will sit on a dharna, insisting there will be no detention camps in West Bengal.
Banerjee claimed the Centre is targeting Bengalis, accusing it of labeling residents as Bangladeshis and threatening detention camps. She asserted that the state would not let any eligible voter be driven out and added that her government knows how to bring someone back if they are forced out.
The chief minister also alleged that the Election Commission is deploying officers aligned with the BJP to influence SIR hearings, with purported Delhi-linked personnel overseeing district magistrates involved in the process.
In her remarks, Banerjee contrasted what she sees as a hardline approach with calls for vigilance, urging supporters to monitor the revision closely. She also remarked that she has not yet filled out her enumeration form, prompting questions about citizenship verification in a charged political climate.
Banerjee did not shy away from calling out what she described as a dangerous trend in national politics, reiterating that the people of West Bengal deserve a fair and transparent revision of their voter lists ahead of the elections.
