Alex Jones's Sandy Hook Award Drastically Cut in Texas Court!
A Texas appeals court slashed Alex Jones's damages for Sandy Hook parents to $1.5M, citing a state cap. This ruling impacts one case, while his $1.4B Connecticut judgment remains.
A Texas appeals court has significantly reduced the amount Infowars founder Alex Jones must pay to the parents of a Sandy Hook victim, slashing a $50 million judgment to just $1.5 million. The decision, delivered by the Texas Third Court of Appeals, cited a statutory cap on damages in the state.
Jones had been ordered to pay $50 million to Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, parents of Jesse Lewis, a 6-year-old killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Jones had falsely claimed for years that the tragic event was a hoax. The appeals court ruled on Friday that the trial court "abused its discretion" by allowing the judgment to exceed Texas's statutory limit on damages.
The unanimous opinion found that Heslin and Lewis did not present sufficient evidence to demonstrate that harassment, fueled by Jones's hoax claims, escalated to a level that would permit them to surpass the state's $750,000 cap on damages for each plaintiff. Since there were two plaintiffs in this specific case (Heslin and Lewis), the award was adjusted to $1.5 million.
It is crucial to note that this ruling does not affect the much larger $1.4 billion judgment against Jones in Connecticut, which the U.S. Supreme Court previously declined to overturn. While a significant reduction for this specific Texas case, Jones still faces immense financial liability from other lawsuits related to his defamatory claims.
Jones's false narratives about the Sandy Hook massacre led to years of torment for the victims' families, who endured death threats and intense harassment from his followers. During trial, Jones admitted the attack was "100% real" and expressed regret for lying, though the families argued it wasn't enough to compensate for their suffering.
