The 80th Venice Film Festival has officially kicked off with a bang, as director Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated drama, “Ink,” made its explosive premiere. The film, which delves into the rise of Rupert Murdoch’s formidable tabloid empire, captured the attention of critics and cinephiles alike, earning a robust four-and-a-half-minute standing ovation after its first screening.

“Ink” stars the talented Jack O'Connell as the ruthless editor of The Sun, Larry Lamb, with veteran actor Guy Pearce portraying the media titan Rupert Murdoch himself. Claire Foy also features as a fictional journalist, adding another layer to the intricate narrative. The enthusiastic applause, a customary sight at Venice, was met with good humor from the cast, with O'Connell playfully acknowledging the marathon ovation alongside Boyle.

However, he and Foy eventually made their way to exit, prompting laughs, even as festival director Alberto Barbera attempted to prolong the cheer by gesturing for them to stay on the Palazzo del Cinema stairs.

The premiere was a star-studded affair, following a poignant tribute to Hollywood icon George Clooney, who was honored with a life achievement award.

Clooney and his wife, Amal, graced the red carpet, alongside the film's cast, O'Connell, Pearce, and Foy, and director Boyle.

Other A-listers, including Jonathan Bailey, were also in attendance, pausing to sign autographs and pose for selfies with eager fans who had camped out overnight to secure prime spots. The glamorous event, held in the Sala Grande Theatre, offered a welcome escape from the hot and humid Lido weather, which was so intense that O'Connell was seen shedding his Dunhill coat.
