Tamil cinema’s gentleman producer AVM Saravanan dies at 86
AVM Saravanan, the soft-spoken steward of AVM Productions, passes away in Chennai at 86, leaving a lasting imprint on Tamil cinema and its stars.
Chennai woke to the news that AVM Saravanan, the soft-spoken steward of AVM Productions, had died on Thursday at the age of 86. For more than six decades, he helped nurture Tamil cinema, guiding a studio that became a beacon for talent and storytelling, and shaping the careers of some of the industry’s biggest names like Kamal Haasan, Sivaji Ganesan, Vyjayanthimala, and Sivakumar. The man widely known as the 'gentleman producer' led AVM Productions, India’s oldest film studio, as it expanded its reach across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. The AVM banner was founded by his father, AV Meiyappan, in 1945, and under the Saravanan era it remained a symbol of craft and reliability in a changing industry.
