Things took a wild turn in West Bengal this Saturday as Trinamool Congress (TMC) heavyweight Abhishek Banerjee found himself in the middle of a chaotic confrontation. During a visit to Sonarpur in the South 24 Parganas district, Banerjee was met not with a warm welcome, but with a barrage of eggs and shoes. The TMC national general secretary was there to meet the family of a party worker who reportedly died in post-poll violence, but the situation spiraled out of control quickly.
As the crowd surged, security personnel had to scramble to protect the leader. Slogans of 'chor chor' (thief, thief) rang out as projectiles were thrown. The scene became so intense that Banerjee actually had to put on a helmet to shield himself while being chased by the mob all the way to a local supporter's residence. Despite the danger, he remained defiant, stating that the attack was pre-planned and that there were attempts on his life. He has already expressed his intent to take the matter to the High Court and inform the Governor about the incident.
The protesters, a large group including many women, seemed particularly upset over Banerjee's past remarks regarding 'DJ music' being played after election results—a comment seen by many as an oblique reference to settling scores with political rivals. The crowd remained outside the house where Banerjee sought shelter for over an hour, insisting they wouldn't leave until they had settled their scores. Police and central forces eventually arrived to manage the impasse.
Adding to the political heat, Banerjee is also facing fresh legal hurdles. He has been summoned by the CID for June 1 in connection with a probe involving a forged signature. Even with these legal clouds hanging over him, the TMC leader remains vocal, claiming he won't be intimidated even if threatened with extreme measures. Between the public fury on the streets and the mounting legal pressure, the political atmosphere in Bengal is clearly reaching a boiling point.
