The 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has wrapped up with some major wins, setting the stage for the upcoming awards season. Among the top honorees, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's Spanish drama, "La Bola Negra," clinched the coveted People's Choice Award, adding another significant accolade to its journey that began with a Best Director win at Cannes earlier this year.
"La Bola Negra," directed by the duo known as Los Javis, captivated audiences with its compelling narrative. Inspired by Federico García Lorca's unfinished play, the film delves into the interconnected lives of three gay men across different eras in Spain: 1932, 1937, and 2017.
Its star-studded cast includes Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, and esteemed actors Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, and Lola Dueñas.
The film's triumph at TIFF is particularly notable as the People's Choice Award has historically been a strong predictor for Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards. With Netflix acquiring the film for a December 2 streaming release, an aggressive awards campaign is expected, especially since Spain has already selected "La Bola Negra" as its official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 2027 Oscars.
Meanwhile, Indian filmmaker Theja Rio made history with his Nagaland-set film, "Angh," which took home the festival's prestigious Platform Prize. This victory is a game-changer for "Angh," as new Academy rules introduced this year grant the Platform Prize winner direct eligibility for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars.
This means "Angh" enters the Oscar race independently of India's traditional Film Federation of India selection process, which has separately nominated Santosh Davakhar's Marathi film "Gondhal." "Angh," described by the Platform jury as offering a "refreshing perspective" and a "deeply resonant portrait of a world," centers on the last surviving chief of a village in Nagaland near the Indo-Burma border, as he confronts profound changes impacting his community and way of life.
The film was awarded a $20,000 CAD prize, with the jury praising Rio's "vision, audacity and courage." Other notable winners at TIFF 2026 included Simon Stone's "Elsinore," starring Andrew Scott, which won the International People's Choice Award, and Barry Avrich's "Darlene Love: I Know Where I've Been," which secured the documentary audience award.
The festival once again proved to be a critical launchpad for films destined for global recognition and awards contention.
