Israeli Minister Demands West Bank War, Annexation in Gaza & Lebanon
Far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich sparks global outrage with controversial calls for war in the West Bank and annexation of parts of Gaza and Lebanon.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a prominent figure from the far-right, has ignited a firestorm of controversy with his recent demands for military action in the occupied West Bank and the annexation of territories in Gaza and Lebanon.
On Sunday, September 27, 2026, Smotrich reportedly called for Israel to "go to war" against Palestinians in the West Bank, using the biblical term "Judea and Samaria." He also advocated for expanding Israeli control, stating,
I would like us to annex at least as far as the yellow line in Gaza and as far as the Litani River in Lebanon.
His rationale? To deter future conflicts, arguing, "if a war ends along the same lines where it began, what will deter the enemy from going to war again?"
The "yellow line" in Gaza refers to an area already under Israeli military control following the conflict triggered by Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023. Smotrich, whose party champions the annexation of the entire West Bank—territory occupied by Israel since 1967—further asserted, "I think we need to go to war in Judea and Samaria, to dismantle the Palestinian Authority that supports terror."
These statements have drawn swift condemnation. The Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority denounced Smotrich's remarks as an "explicit call for escalation, annexation and displacement, aimed at undermining the prospects of an independent Palestinian state." The minister's comments come amidst a backdrop of escalating violence in the West Bank, where over 1,110 Palestinians, including militants, have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers since the Gaza war began.
Concurrently, 49 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have died in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations in the same period. Separately, the Palestinian Health Ministry has reported that the Palestinian death toll in the Gaza war has tragically crossed 74,000.
More than 500,000 Israelis reside in West Bank settlements, which are considered illegal under international law, amidst some three million Palestinians. Despite widespread concerns, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously dismissed settler violence against Palestinians as the actions of a "handful of rioters."
Smotrich's provocative stance adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile region, especially as Israel heads into elections on October 27, with Prime Minister Netanyahu facing a tight contest to retain power. Israeli political leaders, across both the ruling right-wing coalition and the opposition, have largely opposed the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, setting the stage for continued debate and conflict over the future of the territories.
