In an interview published on inside.fifa.com, Collina acknowledged that constructive discussion about refereeing decisions is a natural part of football. However, he firmly condemned the "unfounded allegations" made by the Egyptian side, warning that such claims have no place in the sport and could even incite threats against officials and their families. He unequivocally stated, "Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials... Nobody can claim that FIFA refereeing can be influenced by anyone, not even by the FIFA president (Gianni Infantino)."
Egypt's grievances stem from their dramatic exit from the tournament, where they saw a 2-0 lead overturned by Argentina, culminating in a stoppage-time winner from Enzo Fernandez. Coach Hossam Hassan publicly suggested there might have been pressure on the referee to ensure Argentina remained in the competition. The Egyptian Football Association echoed these concerns, citing "several key incidents" that raised "profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions" directly influencing the match's outcome.
Specifically, Egypt pointed to Mostafa Zico's second-half strike, which was disallowed for what they described as a "non-existent foul" in the build-up.
