Prince Harry's highly anticipated visit to the UK has been overshadowed by a significant development regarding his accommodation. Despite initially accepting an offer to stay at a royal residence, the Duke of Sussex's spokesperson has confirmed that this invitation was withdrawn "at the last moment."
The Duke, who is expected to arrive in London on Monday for a series of charity engagements starting Tuesday, had reportedly spent the past week making alternative security arrangements after his family's security provision was not extended by RAVEC. Once these arrangements were in place, he formally accepted the palace's accommodation offer over the weekend.
However, the offer was subsequently rescinded, with the expected judgment in his case against the publisher of the Daily Mail being cited as the reason. The judgment is due on Tuesday. Prince Harry's spokesperson expressed disappointment, stating, "It is therefore disappointing that the offer has now been withdrawn, with Tuesday's judgment in the Associated Newspapers Limited case cited as the reason."
The spokesperson further highlighted a puzzling aspect of the withdrawal: "Buckingham Palace has, however, been aware of that judgment since last Thursday. It is therefore unclear why, having formally accepted the accommodation offer, it has now been withdrawn at the last moment."
As a result of this sudden change, Prince Harry will now be staying in private accommodation for the entirety of his visit to England. This news comes amidst media speculation about whether his wife, Meghan, and their children would join him, which has been clarified that they will not.
