Sensex jumps as Nifty climbs, snapping losing streak in Mumbai
Indian shares opened higher as Sensex and Nifty bounce back from a losing spell, led by financials, infra and metal stocks amid positive global cues.
Indian benchmark indices opened higher on Thursday, with the Sensex rising 326.98 points to 79,443.17 at 9:15 am after opening at 79,530.48. The Nifty 50 added 143.60 points to 24,624.10, after starting at 24,615.95 and trading in a narrow intraday band between 24,549.10 and 24,631.35 in the first 15 minutes.
Market breadth was broadly positive, with 40 stocks advancing, nine declining and one remaining unchanged. Financials, infra and metals led the gains, helping buoy the broader market amid ongoing volatility.
In early deals, auto major Maruti Suzuki India rose 1.74%, Bajaj Finance climbed over 1%, Larsen & Toubro advanced more than 1%, and Tata Steel was up over 1%. Power Grid Corporation of India and NTPC traded higher, lending support to the indices, while Bharti Airtel gained nearly 1% and select IT names like Infosys, HCL Technologies and TCS posted modest gains. Reliance Industries added about 0.3% as a performer among the index heavyweights.
On the Nifty 50, top gainers included Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, Coal India Ltd, Bajaj Finance, and Larsen & Toubro, each rising between 1.5% and 2% in early deals. However, gains were tempered by weakness or limited momentum in private banks and aviation names, signaling pockets of pressure amid the broader uptick.
Analysts attributed the session's move to bargain buying and positive global cues, with traders noting the market could remain choppy as it digests external signals and domestic catalysts. Investors will watch for further cues as the session progresses.
