The Onion Secures Deal to Relaunch Infowars as Parody Site
The Onion signs a licensing deal to relaunch Infowars as a satirical site, pending court approval, in a bid to counter misinformation and seek accountability.
The Onion has struck a licensing deal to take over Infowars, the right-wing platform run by Alex Jones, and will license Infowars.com and its related intellectual property to Global Tetrahedron, the parent company of The Onion. The arrangement calls for $81,000 a month for six months, with an option to renew for an additional six months. The Onion’s chief executive, Ben Collins, announced the agreement on LinkedIn, calling it “the culmination of a two-year-long effort to get some justice for the Sandy Hook families.” He suggested the relaunch is part of a broader push to counter misinformation and provide a satirical counterpoint to the historically controversial outlet. Jones reacted on social media, claiming The Onion was “in deep shit” and signaling civil rights litigation and ongoing legal fights to challenge what he described as misrepresentation.
