A massive fire at a car-parts factory in Daejeon, South Korea injured 53 people and left 14 missing as firefighters battled the blaze. About 170 workers were on site when it broke out, with cause under investigation.
On Friday, a massive fire erupted at a car parts factory in South Korea, injuring 53 people and leaving 14 others missing, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. The fire broke out at approximately 1.17 local time (0417 GMT) at the factory in Daejeon, approximately 140 kilometers southeast of the capital Seoul.
Reports indicate that at 3.30 p.m. local time, 24 persons were severely injured and 29 were slightly wounded. Some victims were injured due to inhalation of smoke, and others were injured by jumping out of the burning plant. Among the 170 workers who were present in the factory during the fire outbreak, 14 could not be located.
The National Fire Agency gave a national fire mobilization order a little less than an hour after the first report, and this order mobilized the firefighting resources in different parts of the country and made them available to the affected area. Approximately 90 pieces of equipment and fire trucks, together with some 200 firefighters, were deployed to save the situation. The Korea Forest Service helicopters were also scrambled so as to aid in fighting against the flames.
The risk of collapse of the building or chemical explosions prevented the rescue workers from getting inside the factory. One of the two prefabricated structures of the factory that are linked by a walkway was totally destroyed, and the fire spread to the other building. Sodium was reported to be found in the building in large quantities of about 200 kg, increasing the chances of explosions.
