A significant controversy has erupted in Karnataka concerning the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. A delegation from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy, has formally lodged a complaint with Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V. Anbu Kumar, alleging widespread irregularities in the process and demanding an immediate inquiry.
The NDA leaders, including Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, Leader of Opposition R. Ashok, and JD(S) party leader C.B. Suresh Babu, submitted a letter on July 6. In their communication, they called for a comprehensive "re-verification" of all enumeration forms through mandatory door-to-door visits. They also urged for strict legal action against any officials or political functionaries found responsible for these alleged violations.
According to the NDA, officials tasked with conducting the SIR are showing "zero regard for the approved process," which they argue "undermines the very spirit of democracy." The official guidelines mandate that Booth Level Officers (BLOs), under the supervision of the District Election Officer, must personally visit every household, verify each family member's identity, and perform door-to-door verification. However, the NDA leaders claim this crucial step is being skipped in many areas.
Instead of conducting mandated home visits, BLOs are reportedly filling enumeration forms from community halls, mosques, and even their private residences. The letter further alleges that WhatsApp groups have been set up to facilitate this exercise, with individuals being asked to gather at community halls and mosques to complete their forms.
The NDA leadership views these actions as a blatant violation of SIR guidelines. They contend that such practices raise "serious concerns regarding the neutrality and secular character of the electoral process." The very purpose of the SIR is to enhance the accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls, but the current methods employed by BLOs, they argue, are "defeating the very purpose" of this vital democratic exercise.
