A six-year-old boy in Delhi was mauled by a pet pitbull; the owner has been arrested and the dog moved to an animal care facility.
A six-year-old boy in northwest Delhi’s Prem Nagar was severely injured when a pet pitbull suddenly attacked him as he played outside his home. The dog bit off the boy’s right ear, prompting neighbors to rush to his aid and rush him to hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. The police have arrested the dog’s owner, Rajesh Pal, 50, a tailor who lives nearby. Preliminary inquiries indicate the pitbull had been brought home about one-and-a-half years ago by Pal’s son, Sachin, who is presently in jail in connection with an IPC 307 case. The victim’s father, Dinesh, 32, who works at a private factory, has provided a statement to investigators. A case under Sections 291 (negligent conduct with respect to animals) and 125(b) (causing grievous hurt) of the BNS has been registered at Prem Nagar police station. The dog has been shifted to an animal birth control centre in Najafgarh, where it will be kept permanently. The incident underscores concerns about pet ownership and animal control in urban areas, and authorities are reviewing safety protocols following the attack.
