Flash Flood Alert! London Prepares for Intense Thunderstorms

London is bracing itself for a day of severe weather as a yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued across the capital for Wednesday. Mayor Sadiq Khan has urged residents to prepare for potential flash floods, with intense downpours forecast to hit the city. The warning is active from 3am to 10pm.

Mayor Khan took to social media to alert Londoners, stating, "From 3am, London is at risk of severe flash floods." He emphasized the intensity of the forecast rainfall, noting that

intense downpours could see up to 50mm of rainfall arrive in the space of just a few hours - almost the total average rainfall for August.

Forecasters at the Met Office predict a band of heavy showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the capital starting Wednesday morning, with further stormy weather possible into the afternoon.

Specific warnings highlight the possibility of 20-30mm of rain falling in less than an hour in some areas. Critically, isolated spots could experience 40-50mm of rainfall within just two to three hours, which could lead to significant surface water flooding. While many areas might escape the worst of the showers, those caught under the storms could also face large hailstones and frequent lightning.

The Met Office yellow warning signifies a small chance of disruption, including homes and businesses experiencing flooding.

Furthermore, the forecast warns of potential delays and cancellations to train and bus services where flooding or lightning strikes occur.

Londoners are advised to stay updated with local weather reports and take precautions to minimize risks during this period of unsettled weather.
