SC Orders States: Urgent Update on Senior Citizen Facilities & Old-Age Homes!

The Supreme Court of India has issued a significant directive, ordering all States and Union Territories to submit fresh status reports detailing the number of old-age homes and the facilities available to senior citizens across the country. This urgent communication came on Monday, September 7, 2026, from a three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant. Attorney General R.

Venkataramani has been tasked with conveying this direction to the Advocates General and standing counsel of all States and Union Territories. The states are expected to furnish this crucial information within four weeks of receiving the communication, emphasizing the court's intent for swift action. This directive stems from a public interest litigation (PIL) initially filed in 2016 by former Union Minister and senior advocate Ashwini Kumar.

The PIL has consistently sought to address the welfare of senior citizens, particularly those struggling with poverty, lacking adequate shelter, food, or medical care. Mr. Kumar's petition advocates for the establishment of sufficient old-age homes to ensure elderly persons can live with dignity. During the recent hearing, Mr.

Kumar, who appeared in person, expressed his deep concern and anguish over the delays in the case.

He highlighted that despite previous requests, the Union government had yet to provide complete details regarding the number of old-age homes, pension provisions, and medical care for seniors.

He pointed out the significant time elapsed since the matter was last listed in 2022, stressing that the issue affects "crores of people" and requires immediate prioritization.

The Court's intervention underscores the pressing need to improve the living conditions and support systems for India's growing elderly population.

While the landscape of senior living communities is evolving, this ruling specifically targets the fundamental rights and welfare of all senior citizens, especially the most vulnerable, ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve.
