Thousands of passengers across the UK faced significant disruption and delays today following a major technical issue with the country's air traffic control system. The problem, affecting Nats, the primary air traffic control provider for 15 UK airports, led to the cancellation of over 400 flights and impacted tens of thousands of travellers.
The issue stemmed from a technical glitch in Nats' "flight processing system," causing widespread chaos at airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, and Stansted. Airlines were quick to report the severe impact: Ryanair stated that more than 65,000 of its customers had been affected, leading to the cancellation of over 50 scheduled flights.
British Airways also confirmed that over 100 of its flights were either cancelled or diverted, affecting tens of thousands of its passengers.
Budget carrier EasyJet also reported that some of its flights were unable to operate, causing delays across Europe.
Nats announced at approximately 7:30 PM that the "system issue" had been resolved, with the company stating it was "operating normally" and working "as hard as possible to clear the backlog of flights." However, the recovery process is expected to be lengthy. Both Nats and affected airlines, including British Airways, warned that the "severity" of the problem would result in a "significant knock-on impact" for customers and airline staff, extending well beyond the immediate resolution of the technical fault.
Passengers have been urged to check the latest flight information directly with their airlines before travelling, as the aviation industry grapples with the aftermath of an incident described by British Airways as "entirely out of our control and incredibly frustrating." The disruption highlights the critical reliance on robust technical infrastructure for modern air travel, with even a temporary glitch causing massive ripple effects across the continent.
