Ed Sheeran Tour Chaos: All Support Acts Quit Amid Macklemore Controversy

Ed Sheeran's highly anticipated North and South American tour has plunged into disarray, as all his supporting acts have collectively withdrawn. This dramatic turn of events follows the controversial decision to remove rapper Macklemore from the lineup due to his pro-Palestinian remarks made on stage.

The "Thrift Shop" rapper was dropped from the "Loop Tour" after he exclaimed "Free Palestine" during a September 5 concert in New Jersey. Macklemore clarified his stance, stating that criticism of Israel or apartheid is not a criticism of Jewish people, emphasizing his message for peace and dignity for all.

He claims his removal was orchestrated by Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, a venue where Sheeran is scheduled to perform. Kraft's representatives stated the decision was due to Macklemore's recent comments and a "broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery," while denying it was about silencing Palestinian suffering.

In a show of solidarity and protest, Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Irish folk band Beoga, some of whom even performed with Sheeran during his set, announced their departure from the tour within an hour of each other.

Finneas, a close collaborator of Billie Eilish, declared, "Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed."

The Irish acts, Rowe and Beoga, drew parallels to their country's history. Beoga cited their role in the Irish Artists for Palestine movement and stated, "We are Irish people who understand colonialism." Rowe added that as Irish people familiar with "genocide, forced famine and violent occupation," he could not

stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices.

Lukas Graham echoed this sentiment, asserting, "Money doesn’t give you the right to own the conversation."

Ed Sheeran, for his part, posted a statement on Instagram, asserting that Macklemore's removal was "the promoter's decision, it was not mine." He emphasized his commitment to his fans and touring crew, and his refusal to be drawn into a public discussion about the conflict in Gaza. However, he has not commented since the mass exodus of his remaining supporting acts, leaving the future of the tour, including an upcoming performance in Philadelphia, uncertain.
