Delhi's Future Unveiled: DDA Plans Massive Urban Overhaul!
Delhi Development Authority (DDA) reveals ambitious plans for a sustainable, future-ready city! From riverfront development to tackling urban challenges, discover the massive urban overhaul set to transform Delhi.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is embarking on an ambitious journey to transform the capital, outlining a comprehensive development roadmap that spans over 1,400 sq. km. This extensive eight-point programme, recently discussed by the DDA's advisory council chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, aims to address long-standing urban challenges and pave the way for inclusive, sustainable growth.
The DDA's new plan incorporates several key initiatives. Over 207 sq. km has been designated for transit-oriented development, focusing on integrating transport with urban planning. Additionally, more than 200 sq. km is earmarked for expansion through land pooling, a crucial strategy to develop new housing zones. A significant 100 sq. km area in Zone-O, covering a stretch of the Yamuna floodplain from Wazirabad to Okhla, is slated for a major riverfront development project.
The plan also focuses on targeted redevelopment in existing areas, including 24 sq. km for the Old City, 31 sq. km for the Bungalow Zone, and a 20 sq. km high-density corridor designed to support growth along major transit routes. These efforts are part of a broader vision to enhance the city's infrastructure and living standards.
During the advisory council meeting, officials identified a range of pressing urban challenges. These include the persistent shortage of affordable housing, the growth and subsequent relocation and rehabilitation of slums and jhuggi jhopri clusters, and the long-pending regularisation and redevelopment of unauthorised colonies. Environmental concerns such as urban flooding, urban heat islands, and the deterioration of the city's heritage are also high on the agenda.
Lieutenant-Governor Sandhu emphasized that "Delhi's growth must be inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready." He also issued a stern directive to the DDA to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against encroachments. To bolster this effort, officials briefed him on an ongoing drone survey across the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, designed to strengthen ground-level detection of illegal constructions and encroachments.
This holistic approach aims not only to expand Delhi's footprint but also to resolve its complex urban issues, promising a more organised, equitable, and environmentally conscious future for its residents.
