In Bengaluru's Langford Town, 57-year-old CJ Roy, founder and chairperson of the Confident Group, died after shooting himself inside his office while Income Tax search and seizure operations were underway on Friday. Roy had been questioned earlier in the afternoon; after asking permission to call his mother, he reportedly fired a pistol in an adjoining room and was found in a pool of blood. The episode unfolds as I-T raids connected to the Kerala region began earlier in the week.
The raids, which started on Wednesday, targeted assets linked to the Confident Group with business footprints in Kerala, Karnataka and Dubai. Roy's brother, CJ Babu, said there were no issues in the business and suggested the raids may have pushed him to an extreme step. The I-T Department has not issued a public statement yet as investigations continue and authorities review material from the premises.
The Confident Group marked its 20th anniversary this year and has grown into a name associated with contemporary real estate development across multiple regions. Roy's wife, son and daughter, based in Dubai, were expected to reach Bengaluru on Saturday to be with the family.
