Richard Hughes Joins Saudi Giant Al-Hilal After Liverpool Exit!
Former Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes makes a blockbuster move to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, bringing a wealth of Premier League experience and sparking new transfers. Discover the full story!
Richard Hughes, the experienced football executive, has officially been appointed as the new sporting director for Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al-Hilal. This significant move was confirmed on Sunday, marking Hughes' departure from Liverpool, where he had served for two years. His arrival at the Riyadh-based club signals Al-Hilal's continued ambition to bolster its ranks with top-tier talent and expertise from European football.
Hughes, 47, initially joined Liverpool in 2024 after a tenure with Bournemouth.
During his time at Anfield, he notably appointed Arne Slot as Jürgen Klopp's successor for the head coach position.
This decision, as reported, led to immediate success, with the Reds claiming the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season.
However, the narrative took a surprising turn as Slot was subsequently sacked and replaced by Andoni Iraola in June.
Al-Hilal, already a dominant force in the Saudi Pro League, released a statement emphasizing that Hughes’ appointment is part of their broader strategy to "strengthen its football system and develop its sporting structure with specialised expertise." This aligns with the club's ongoing drive to attract prominent figures from English football. Hughes is the latest in a series of high-profile transfers, following in the footsteps of star players like Gabriel Martinelli, Crysencio Summerville, and Ollie Watkins, who all made the switch to Al-Hilal this summer from Arsenal, West Ham United, and Aston Villa, respectively.
The club is currently managed by Simone Inzaghi, formerly at the helm of Italian giants Inter.
The move to Al-Hilal also appears to be a reunion for Hughes, as two key members of Liverpool's recruitment department, Mark Burchill and Craig McKee, are reportedly set to follow him to Saudi Arabia.
Burchill and McKee had previously joined Liverpool with Hughes from Bournemouth two years prior, indicating a strong working relationship that Al-Hilal hopes to leverage for future success.
This latest development underscores the growing influence of the Saudi Pro League on the global football landscape, as it continues to attract top administrative and playing talent from established European leagues.
