Pakistani authorities detained Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in Lahore on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Her detention comes just days before a planned protest by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, aimed at pressuring the government for his release. Aleema Khan, a vocal advocate for her brother, was transferred to Kot Lakhpat jail.
She was detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, a law that allows authorities to arrest individuals perceived as a threat to public peace. Deputy Commissioner Lahore, Muhammad Ali Ijaz, issued the 30-day detention order.
The PTI plans its major protest for September 27.
Adding to the escalating tensions, Imran Khan's son, Kasim, took to social media to allege further family abductions. Kasim claimed his aunts, Dr. Uzma and Noreen, along with cousins Shershah and Shahrez, were "forced into vehicles" and taken from their homes.
These allegations could not be independently verified.
Noreen Niazi, another sister of Imran Khan, expressed concern over the arrests, questioning why authorities are detaining women. PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned Aleema's arrest, demanding her immediate court appearance and stating that "a sister is being punished for speaking up for her brother."
Imran Khan, a former cricket star turned politician, has been incarcerated since 2023.
He was ousted from power in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote and is currently embroiled in numerous legal battles.
