Free Parking Boost? Campaign Aims for 90 Mins Free to Revive UK High Streets!
A new campaign is pushing for a national standard of 90 minutes free parking to revitalize struggling UK high streets. Backed by retail experts and fashion legend Jeff Banks, could this petition be the solution our local
Shoppers across the UK are being encouraged to rally behind a new campaign calling on the Government to implement a national standard of 90 minutes of free parking in town and city centers. The initiative aims to breathe new life into Britain's often struggling high streets, making them more accessible and appealing to consumers.
The campaign, spearheaded by retail event organizer Spring & Autumn Fair, has launched a parliamentary petition to gather widespread support.
Proponents believe that such a move would not only attract more shoppers but also level the playing field for businesses nationwide, ending the current postcode lottery of parking regulations.
Reinforcing the campaign's potential impact, a recent survey of over 2,000 UK consumers revealed that a significant 63% would be more inclined to visit their local high street if free parking were available. Furthermore, the 'Voice of Retail' report, commissioned by Spring & Autumn Fair, highlighted that nearly four in ten of the 650 independent retailers surveyed identified free parking as the single most crucial step local authorities could take to support urban retail hubs.
Adding weight to the campaign, renowned British fashion designer Jeff Banks, co-founder of the Warehouse chain and former presenter of 'The Clothes Show,' has publicly signed the petition and urged others to follow suit. Banks articulated the core issue, stating,
If we're serious about supporting local shops and the communities around them, we need to remove the barriers that make visiting the high street harder than it needs to be.
He added, “Making 90 minutes' free parking available would be a simple, practical step that could make a real difference to footfall and give people another reason to choose their local high street.” Currently, parking rules vary drastically across the UK, with some towns offering no free parking at all, while others provide as little as 30 minutes.
The campaign organizers argue that a consistent 90-minute free parking standard would eliminate this inconsistency, fostering a more equitable environment for both shoppers and retailers. Jackson Szabo, portfolio director at Spring & Autumn Fair, emphasized that consumers consistently express a desire for vibrant town centers, and accessible parking is a critical component of achieving that vibrancy.
