Indian investors are making a strong comeback to midcap and smallcap mutual funds, with June witnessing a significant surge in inflows. This renewed interest has played a pivotal role in the recovery of equity mutual funds, showcasing growing confidence in these market segments.
According to the latest data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), equity mutual fund inflows jumped nearly 26% month-on-month in June. Midcap funds led the charge, attracting the highest inflows among all equity mutual fund categories at a whopping Rs 6,090 crore. Smallcap funds also saw robust investor participation, recording the second-highest inflows during the same period. On a month-on-month basis, inflows into midcap funds increased by 39%, and smallcap funds by 13%.
Experts attribute this positive trend to the strong performance of broader market stocks, which has encouraged investors to allocate more funds to midcap and smallcap schemes. Feroze Azeez, Joint CEO at Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, noted that despite recent market volatility, investors continue to back these segments, indicating a focus on long-term growth potential rather than short-term fluctuations.
Adding to the positive sentiment, the mutual fund Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) stoppage ratio eased in June, falling below 100% for the first time in months. This means more new SIPs were registered than those discontinued, reflecting sustained investor discipline and trust in long-term investing. SIP contributions also hit a record Rs 31,781 crore, further reinforcing the optimistic outlook for India's growth story through mutual funds.
Both midcap and smallcap categories have shown a significant rebound compared to May, cementing their position as major contributors across the equity universe. This sustained investor backing underscores the attractive returns and growth opportunities perceived in these dynamic market segments.
