A tragic train collision in the Bedford area has resulted in the death of a train driver and left 89 people injured, with emergency services declaring a major incident. The incident, which occurred around 5:15 PM BST on Friday, involved two southbound East Midlands Railway (EMR) services, both en route to London St Pancras.
The East of England Ambulance service confirmed the severity of the injuries: eleven people sustained very serious injuries, 22 were seriously injured, and 56 others received minor injuries. The British Transport Police (BTP) is leading the investigation into the cause of the collision, which remains unknown at this time. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey expressed deep sorrow, confirming the deceased driver was a former RMT representative.
Passengers on the ill-fated trains recounted harrowing experiences. Dr. Peter Knapp, who was in the front carriage of one of the colliding trains, described the impact as feeling "like I'd been in a bomb explosion." He witnessed "people's bloodied faces and people's legs looked broken and there was smoke everywhere." Another passenger, Shola Mene, spoke of a "big bang" that sent people flying from their seats.
Following the crash, EMR services to and from London St Pancras were suspended for the remainder of Friday evening, with disruptions anticipated to continue into Saturday. Police, fire, and ambulance teams quickly responded to the scene, south of the Elstow interchange, with passengers being processed and those with injuries transported to hospitals. Some witnesses reported seeing individuals "spitting out blood" at the scene.
