Sensex Rises 595 Points on Bihar Poll Hope and US-India Trade Progress
Sensex climbs 595 points as Bihar exit polls and US-India trade progress lift market sentiment, with Groww and Tata Motors listings adding to gains.
Mumbai: The benchmark Sensex jumped 595 points, up 0.7%, to 84,467, while the Nifty rose 181 points to 25,876. The index had touched an intraday high of 84,652, signaling strong momentum as traders reacted to political and global cues. Exit polls from Bihar pointed to a continuation of the NDA government, bolstering confidence in the domestic political outlook and helping lift risk appetite across equities. A similar upbeat tone prevailed in global markets following progress in US-India trade talks and the end of the US government shutdown, which together buoyed sentiment and drew buyers to Indian equities.
Global cues played a key role as investors bet on potential rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve and a softer global rate trajectory, prompting a broad-based rally in Indian shares led by large-cap names. Emerging markets showed resilience, and Indian equities mirrored that strength amid improving risk sentiment. The day’s gains also reflected robust participation from IPOs and listings on the exchange.
The session featured fresh market activity with the listing of Groww Garage Ventures, the fintech-driven broker behind Groww, which debuted at Rs 112, a 12% premium to its IPO price, and closed at Rs 131. The company now commands a market value approaching Rs 81,000 crore. In another notable development, Tata Motors listed its demerged commercial vehicles business, finishing around Rs 328 with a market cap near Rs 1.2 lakh crore.
Market breadth remained positive as investors rotated into large-caps while the broader market participated in the rally. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that global markets rallied on renewed risk appetite, with optimism over the US shutdown resolution and rate-cut expectations fueling the mood. He pointed out that emerging markets outperformed, helped by improving sentiment and steady liquidity flows.
Overall, the session added about Rs 4.8 lakh crore to investors’ wealth, bringing BSE’s market capitalization to about Rs 473.7 lakh crore. The combination of domestic political clarity, positive global cues, and brace for potential rate cuts supported another leg of the ongoing bull run in Indian equities.
