Chelsea Secures Pep Chavarria! £16.3M Left-Back Arrives on Five-Year Deal
Chelsea strengthens its defence with the signing of 28-year-old Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano for £16.3M. Find out how this five-year deal fits into the club's major squad overhaul!
Chelsea Football Club has officially welcomed its latest addition, Pep Chavarria, who joins from Rayo Vallecano on a five-year contract. The left-back's move to Stamford Bridge is reportedly worth £16.3 million, with an additional £1.7 million in add-ons, as the Blues continue their significant squad overhaul under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Chavarria, aged 28, is expected to fill the void left by Marc Cucurella, who departed for Real Madrid earlier this summer. He will now compete with Jorrel Hato for the crucial left full-back position. Despite his age, Chavarria brings just four seasons of top-flight experience, having moved from Segunda Division outfit Real Zaragoza in 2022.
Expressing his excitement on Chelsea’s website, Chavarria stated, "I’m so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success." His signing aligns with a recent strategy under Alonso to blend experience into the squad, following the arrivals of 35-year-old striker Danny Welbeck and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson.
This marks Chavarria as Chelsea’s third defensive acquisition this summer, alongside right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta and Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. The club's recruitment drive comes after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, which saw them finish 10th. The hierarchy has since committed to shifting focus from solely inexperienced players to those who can immediately challenge for titles.
However, the club hasn't entirely abandoned its investment in youth, having broken their transfer record in July with the £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and bringing in Argentina international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg. Meanwhile, England international Trevoh Chalobah has also moved on, joining Serie A side Como.
