The United Kingdom has officially recorded a provisional new June temperature record, with the mercury soaring to an unprecedented 37.7C in Lingwood, Norfolk, on Friday. This figure, subject to verification, shatters the previous June high of 35.6C set way back in 1976 by more than two degrees Celsius – a significant jump compared to past record-breaking increments.
The intense heatwave engulfed much of Britain last week, causing widespread disruption. Public transport services faced cancellations and halts, while numerous public attractions were forced to close their doors. In Kent, a hosepipe ban was swiftly implemented to manage surging water demand, highlighting the strain on resources.
Schools across several counties, including Somerset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and Oxfordshire, saw at least 571 institutions either fully or partially closed due to the extreme conditions. Hospitals also felt the brunt, with some declaring critical incidents. University Hospital Southampton, for instance, had to cancel planned operations and outpatient appointments, as health chiefs warned of a surge in life-threatening emergency calls.
Scientists have issued stark warnings, stating that a heatwave of this magnitude would have been virtually impossible just 50 years ago. They attribute the increasing intensity and frequency of such extreme heat events to human-driven climate change. Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page reinforced this message, commenting, "This exceptional heat has been unprecedented for June and is another marker on how climate change is shifting the dial on temperature extremes in the UK."
The record-breaking temperature initially saw 37.3C recorded at Santon Downham in Suffolk on the same day, which itself surpassed Thursday's 36.7C in Merryfield, Somerset. The confirmation of 37.7C in Lingwood further solidifies the severity of this climatic event.
