IIT Delhi Leads India's QS Sustainability Rankings 2026

IIT Delhi has retained India's top spot in the QS World University Rankings 2026 for sustainability, placing 205th globally with a score of 83.1. Across India, 103 universities are listed in the sustainability rankings, the fourth-highest country count behind the United States, China and the United Kingdom. The rankings cover almost 2,000 institutions from more than 100 locations worldwide, assessing environmental and social sustainability, including environmental research, education, equality, employability, knowledge exchange and health and wellbeing. In the Indian context, IIT Delhi leads the national list, followed by IIT Bombay at 235 and IIT Kharagpur at 236 in the broad Indian standings. IIT Delhi also ranks 93rd globally in Employability, while IIT Kharagpur sits 96th in the same category, and IIT Bombay is placed around the top 100 in environmental impact. Among the 15 IITs featured in the ranking, several have shown progress, with six improving their positions since the inaugural edition three years ago. Overall, 12 Indian universities are in the global top 500, 30 saw their positions decline, 32 improved, and 15 stayed the same. There were 26 new Indian entries this year, reflecting a growing footprint for the country in sustainability-focused higher education. Globally, the rankings feature nearly 2,000 institutions from more than 100 locations, with the top 15 dominated by the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, Australia and the United States. Lund University in Sweden took the top global spot in this edition, underscoring a continuing trend of strong performance by European and North American universities in sustainability metrics.
