Haryana DGP Demands Action on Singers Promoting Gang Culture
Haryana police vow strict action against artists promoting gun culture in music as Operation Trackdown nets weapons and foils plots.
Haryana’s Director General of Police, O.P. Singh, has urged his officers to take strict legal action against singers who promote gang lifestyles in music and videos, arguing they should be treated as criminals. The call comes in a letter written to subordinates as the state marks the success of “Operation Trackdown,” an 18-day campaign aimed at tracking down criminals. The DGP stressed that such artists, driven by money and power, can influence the youth to abandon the guidance of parents, teachers, and society’s discipline.
He praised the police force for their role in the operation, saying more than sixty murder plots were foiled during the campaign. He added that the effort involved dismantling the criminals’ entire ecosystem and continuing to act against those who handle illegal income, supply weapons, provide hiding places, and publicize criminal activity on social media and among the public.
In conjunction with the crackdown, police have recovered more than 250 country-made pistols and revolvers and about 350 live cartridges from more than 1,500 suspects. Earlier this year, Haryana police had banned around 10 songs suspected of promoting gun culture and had halted at least two concerts, including one in Gurugram, due to concerns over violence and incitement. Six of the banned songs were performed by Masoom Sharma, a prominent Haryanvi singer. The move sparked debates in the State Assembly about balancing artistic expression with public safety.
The DGP’s message to officers is clear: aggressively pursue the sources of illegal funding, weapon supply chains, and the online promotion of criminal activity, to ensure that crime is not glamorized in music or media. The drive signals a broader push to curb gun culture’s influence on youth and to dismantle criminal networks operating behind entertainment and social media.
