Key Iran-Gulf Strait of Hormuz Talks Postponed for "Consensus"

A crucial meeting aimed at fostering stability in the vital Strait of Hormuz region has been postponed.

Talks between Iran and several Gulf countries, initially scheduled for September 14 in Oman, will now take place at a later date. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi announced the delay, stating it was "in the interests of consensus" and reiterated commitment to dialogue for lasting cooperation.

Iranian media, citing foreign ministry officials, indicated that the postponement came at the request of some regional nations, a decision made jointly by Tehran and Muscat. The meeting's primary goal was to discuss potential agreements on managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit choke point.

The region has seen heightened tensions, with commercial ship traffic in the Strait remaining low since a war began on February 28. Iran has previously expressed interest in charging fees for transit, asserting that traffic into the Persian Gulf passes through its waters.

Prior to the postponement, only Iraq had publicly confirmed its attendance, while Bahrain explicitly stated it would not participate due to a lack of diplomatic relations with Tehran. There had been some regional optimism that these talks could provide an opportunity for Gulf nations to present a unified response to the ongoing conflict, which has seen Iran launch attacks reportedly targeting U.S. military assets on their territories.

Despite this setback, a glimmer of positive diplomatic engagement emerged elsewhere.

Iran's President Pezeshkian recently reported a "good talk" with Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. President Pezeshkian expressed hopes of "putting the past behind us" and building a shared future, signaling a potential thaw in broader regional relations amidst the ongoing complexities.
