The Rise of Romantic AI: From Fiction to Feature
The evolution of AI is something that we are all aware of, in terms of how our occupation is affected. But what about AI as a partner… I mean, I’ve watched Her(2014), Blade Runner 2049(2017), Ex Machina(2015), all of which prominently portray the potential that AI has to become a romantic interest. Many other films also coyly reference this aspect in a satirical manner.
With bots on Replika, Character ai and even Chatgpt, that are tailored with romantic personalities, people have the tendency to find comfort in talking to them even though they aren’t real. It require much less effort to talk to an algorithm designed to give you the responses that you want.
We might start a conversation ironically and then begin to dive deeper into the illusion. People use AI as a form of venting because it is much easier to rant at a chatbot that will not judge you than an actual person.
Why People Are Doing This
In an increasingly digital world where we spend most of our time online, with even our social interactions primarily happening online; conversing with AI is a very attractive alternative. People tend to feel very isolated in this overly stimulated and chronically online generation where we’re hyper aware of too many things at once. The loneliness gets to you.
Having a non-judgemental companion that never gets bored of you or leaves you and is always available is an ideal we all secretly crave. Not only that, AI can tailor its responses and uses its memory to ensure that every response is the best one which only makes it that much more attractive to the user. People who struggle with real intimacy find it much easier to talk to a simulation and find comfort in that.
Where Does This Leave Us?
But at the end of the day, it’s all fake. We buy into it just for our comfort but it is nothing but another form of emotional manipulation that can have adverse effects on our ability to interact in the real world. It can make people socially stunted and leave them reliant on a chatbot for comfort. Not only that, but the more we converse, the more data we give away and who knows how private those conversations are.
Love is an emotion that AI cannot mimic, no matter what we try. That is something unique to the human race. No matter how hard we try, we can give it every possible attribute but it will always lack that something which is humanity.
If you want to do it, that’s perfectly alright. But we must always remember to keep boundaries and be aware not to go too far.
AI can do many things and we can entertain ourselves with all of its features, but there has to be a line and it is important for us to draw that line at the right place and ensure we do not cross it.
