An Indian-origin individual, Khadeer Khan Mohammed, has been declared a fugitive by U.S. authorities, accused of orchestrating a massive $93 million Medicare fraud. The Department of Health and Human Services states that Mohammed is wanted for submitting or directing the submission of false claims for laboratory genetic testing that were ineligible for reimbursement.
According to officials, Mohammed allegedly utilized a company named American Premier to file approximately $93 million in fraudulent Medicare claims.
This illicit activity resulted in Medicare making payments of at least $65 million.
The Office of the Inspector General, Department of Health and Human Services, highlighted the scale of the fraud, noting that in just ten days in 2023, Medicare disbursed about $13 million on suspected fraudulent claims linked to this scheme.
The alleged fraud scheme involved using physicians' personal identifying information without their knowledge or consent.
Mohammed purportedly submitted claims for genetic tests for beneficiaries with whom these physicians had no treatment relationship.
Crucially, these tests were not ordered by the physicians and were not used in the care of the beneficiaries, rendering them medically unnecessary and fraudulent.
The timeframe for these alleged activities spans from around August 2023 to October 2024, occurring in the Northern District of Texas and other locations. Authorities now believe that Khadeer Khan Mohammed is currently located in Hyderabad, India, as the search for him intensifies.
