The two people were in their 20s when the bite occurred around 6:30 a.m., and bystanders rushed to help before paramedics arrived. The woman died at the scene, and the man was flown by helicopter to a hospital in a critical condition. Police said they would work with experts to determine the species involved and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The beach in Crowdy Bay National Park was closed to swimmers following the attack. The park, known for its coastal scenery, camping and hiking spots, is a popular destination along the state’s east coast. Officials urged the public to stay out of the water and to heed lifeguards’ guidance as the investigation continues.
Early investigations pointed to a large bull shark as the likely culprit, according to the Department of Primary Industries. Bull sharks are among the few species that can thrive in both fresh and salt water and are considered potentially dangerous to people. In response to the incident, authorities deployed “smart” drumlines and planned drone surveillance to monitor the area, with surrounding beaches also likely to remain closed for the next 24 hours.
