Sensex climbs 283 pts; Nifty above 25,800 as metals, FMCG lead
Sensex jumps on metal and FMCG gains while IT drags; persistent DII inflows boost confidence amid a cautious market.
Domestic equity benchmarks climbed for a third straight session, with the Sensex at 83,734.25, up 283.29 points, and the Nifty at 25,819.35, up 93.95 points. The move came as metal, FMCG and PSU bank stocks supported the index, even as IT stocks faced selling pressure after a brief relief in the prior session. The market’s tone remained cautiously constructive, underpinned by optimism around domestic growth prospects and improving earnings visibility.
DII inflows continued to provide structural support, mitigating volatility and bolstering investor confidence despite mixed global cues. Five stocks—RIL, ITC, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, and Tata Steel—were large contributors to the Sensex’s gain.
Among sectoral peers, the BSE Metal index rose about 1.24% to 39,528.15, the BSE FMCG index climbed 1.16% to 19,228.39, and the PSU Bank index gained 1.41% to 5,394.09. In contrast, the IT index slipped about 1.11% to 31,624.81, with the Nifty IT index down around 2.5%.
Overall, price action remained range-bound and choppy in the absence of fresh triggers, suggesting a consolidation phase rather than a decisive directional move. Investors will be watching how global cues and domestic growth signals shape the near-term trajectory, as earnings visibility continues to improve but external shocks linger.
