Nashville was filled with emotion and reverence as the late country music icon, Dolly Parton, was posthumously honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Americana Awards and Honors on Wednesday. The ceremony, held at the historic Ryman Auditorium, saw few dry eyes as Parton's pre-taped video message played, accepting the prestigious accolade.
Parton, who passed away on August 25, appeared on screen after a heartfelt introduction by fellow legend Emmylou Harris.
It's Dolly. I'm honored to be receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association,
the beloved artist began.
She reflected on her deep connection to roots music, now known as Americana, recalling her upbringing in the Smoky Mountains.
She spoke about her 1997 album, 'Hungry Again,' and how it led to a series of bluegrass and acoustic projects that marked a significant 'musical renaissance' in her career. These albums, she noted, introduced her to new fans and were embraced by the Americana music community. "I want to thank everyone at the AMA for recognizing me with this award.
It's a great honor truly, and just know that I will always love you," Parton concluded, her iconic words eliciting cheers from the crowd.
Following the powerful video, Brandi Carlile and her band I’m With Her performed a moving rendition of Parton's classic, 'Coat of Many Colors.' Carlile has been a vocal admirer and advocate for Parton, consistently paying tribute during her Human tour. She performed three of Parton's songs at her Nashville arena date just days after Parton's passing, including "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You."
Carlile also shared a touching tribute on Instagram, praising Parton for her unwavering acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.
Before I met her, I loved her because she took a risk and accepted me (and all of us) for being gay in a time where she didn't need to say anything,
Carlile wrote, highlighting Parton's consistent choice to speak only on matters that brought love and mercy.
