The greatest attraction is flexibility. Employees desire to have time, projects, and sources of revenue. Almost fifty percent of gig workers indicate that the ability to select their working hours is the primary reason why they want to live this way. Younger generations are bringing about this new work culture. To most people, work is no longer about stability. It is concerning identity and independence.

Freedom Comes With A Cost

Freedom of freelancing is a very cruel truth most of the time. Income is unpredictable. The benefits, such as health insurance, are absent. The employees have to keep on acquiring new clients. In research, it is established that 50 to 75 percent of freelancers suffer moderate to high levels of burnout. The largest reason is financial instability.

Isolation is also a problem for many freelancers. No team support and office environment. The presence of work-life boundaries is eliminated. Leisure time turns into working time. And it is worsened by the increase in living costs. Approximately 88 percent of gig workers indicate that they are working more in order to make the ends meet. The outcome is the circle of never-ending hustle. Freedom exists. But so does exhaustion.

Why Workers Still Choose It

Freelancing has been on the increase even in the face of pressure. The reason is simple. The traditional jobs are no longer considered to be safe. Burnout exists there, too. The recent reports indicate that the burnout rates in all occupations are at an all-time high. Numerous employees are caught in tight systems, and they have little power.

Freelancing can be used as a way out. It empowers individuals to decide on their jobs and success in their own ways. Even if it means uncertainty. This is also contributed to by the emergence of side hustles. A higher number of individuals are juggling between two or more sources of income rather than having one employer. Such a transition is altering the career construction.

The question remains open. Will freelancing become the new way of work, or is it another form of pressure? In the meantime, a large number are opting to work in chaos instead of cubicles. Not because it is easy. But it is because it feels like being in control.
