India Pushes BRICS for Open Markets & Local Currency Trade Amidst Widening Deficit
India's trade deficit with BRICS nations is soaring. Union Minister Piyush Goyal urges member states to open markets, simplify regulations, and trade in local currencies for mutual growth.
India is facing a significant challenge within the BRICS bloc, as its trade deficit with member nations is projected to balloon to an alarming $226.1 billion by FY2025-26. This widening gap has prompted Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to call for urgent measures to foster deeper economic cooperation and balance trade relations.
Speaking at the BRICS Business Forum 2026, Minister Goyal emphasized the critical need for BRICS member states to open their markets more readily to each other's products. He stressed that trade among partners should be "deep, resilient, and with a diversified supply chain," ensuring it never becomes an impediment to the growth and well-being of the bloc's members.
Goyal urged member nations to work collectively on simplifying regulatory procedures and facilitating faster clearance of consignments.
He highlighted that BRICS represents an important market for products India aims to export globally.
This push comes as India seeks to enhance its export potential and reduce its reliance on single markets.
A significant proposal from the Minister was the call for BRICS nations to engage in trade using local currencies and to link their payment systems. This move aims to reduce dependency on traditional reserve currencies, streamline transactions, and potentially mitigate currency fluctuation risks, thereby strengthening economic ties within the bloc.
The Union Minister reiterated that enhanced BRICS cooperation has the potential to create jobs, wealth, and prosperity for countries that collectively represent half of the global population and 40% of the global GDP. His statements underscore India's commitment to transforming BRICS into a more equitable and mutually beneficial economic partnership, especially in light of the growing trade imbalances. #BRICSSummit #PiyushGoyal #IndiaTrade #LocalCurrencyTrade
