India-Bangladesh ties warm up as envoy meets PM; Delhi visit on horizon
India signals positive, people-centric ties with Bangladesh as Tarique Rahman's government signals openness; Ganga water sharing, visas and energy cooperation on the agenda ahead of a Bangladesh FM visit to Delhi.
Indian Envoy Pranay Verma met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday, conveying New Delhi’s intent to pursue positive, constructive, and people-centric ties based on mutual interest. The meeting comes as India and Bangladesh are making efforts to rebuild bilateral relations after Rahman’s rise to the premiership following the February parliamentary polls. The High Commission noted the discussion focused on engagement that benefits both peoples and aligns with national development priorities.
Ganga water sharing, visas, and energy cooperation are likely to be key items on the agenda for the BangladeshForeign Minister’s upcoming Delhi visit, scheduled for April 7–8. The talks would mark the first such visit since the change in government in Dhaka, with the newly elected BNP indicating a greater willingness to negotiate the renewal of the Ganga water sharing treaty compared to the interim Hasina-era government. The visit underscores a concerted effort to normalise ties and push forward on practical, people-centered cooperation across multiple domains.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is set to travel to New Delhi for talks that are expected to cover the renewal of the Ganga water treaty, energy cooperation amid West Asia tensions, and the restoration of visa services. Both sides appear committed to re-engaging after a period of strain, signaling a broader push to restore normalised, constructive relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.
