The UK is bracing for yet another significant heatwave, prompting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue an amber heat health alert. This warning is in effect from midday on Thursday until 8 pm on Tuesday, covering large swathes of England, specifically the east, southeast, and southwest regions. A yellow alert has also been issued for the Midlands for the same period.
An amber alert signifies that a “significant impact” is anticipated across health and care services, meaning potential disruptions and increased strain on resources. For areas under a yellow alert, a “minor impact” is expected on health and social care. Alongside health concerns, there's a heightened risk of water-related incidents, including dangers from cold-water shock and drowning, as people seek relief from the heat.
Temperatures are set to soar, with forecasters predicting the mercury to climb above 30C by Friday in the southeast. East Anglia could see temperatures as high as 32C on Friday, while Saturday might offer a slight dip to 28C. However, the heat will quickly return, with Sunday expecting 32C in the south and southeast. Monday brings no respite, with predictions of a sweltering 33C.
Meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey highlighted that while some areas might experience overcast skies, the temperatures will continue to rise. He also warned of increasing humidity, making conditions feel "muggy" during the latter half of the weekend. This could lead to "quite uncomfortable nights for sleeping," with overnight temperatures remaining in the high teens across southeastern areas.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, emphasized the serious health outcomes that can arise from sustained periods of warm weather, particularly for older adults. He urged everyone to take sensible precautions, advising health and social care services in affected regions to prepare. Crucially, the public is reminded to check on elderly relatives and neighbours, ensuring their safety and well-being during this intense period of heat.
