Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Kicks Off 2026 Season Across Villages
Tamil Nadu's Jallikattu season opens with Thatchankurichi's event, a digital scoreboard at Avaniapuram, and a car prize for the best tamers as Pongal celebrations kick into high gear.
The season’s opening jallikattu was held at Thatchankurichi village in Pudukkottai district on January 3, 2026, marking the start of Tamil Nadu’s traditional bull-taming sporting calendar. More than 450 bulls were unleashed into the arena while about 200 young men vied to tame them, setting an energetic tone for the months ahead.
Avaniapuram in the Madurai district hosted the next big event during Pongal week on January 15. For the first time, a digital scoreboard was introduced to ensure transparency as tamers and onlookers watched the action unfold. Balamurugan of Valayankulam in Madurai district emerged as the season’s standout, taming 22 bulls and earning a car as a prize.
On Maattu Pongal day, January 16, jallikattu was scheduled at Palamedu in Madurai district and at Suriyur in Tiruchi district. Suriyur was conducting the contest in a newly constructed permanent arena, signaling a modernization of the usual setup. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to inaugurate the world-famous Alanganallur jallikattu in Madurai district on January 17, Saturday, drawing spectators from across the state and beyond.
Across these events, organizers and participants are balancing a spirit of cultural celebration with recent efforts toward transparency and safety, as the Pongal season brings together families, communities, and visitors in a shared devotion to this storied tradition.
