Shock metal band GWAR and fans mourn the passing of Chuck Varga, the legendary 'Sexecutioner' and founding artistic visionary, at 68. Discover his immense legacy.
The metal world is mourning the loss of Chuck Varga, a visionary artist and founding member of the shock metal band GWAR, who passed away at the age of 68. Varga, known for his iconic role as "the Sexecutioner," had been battling cancer.
His passing was announced on Friday by GWAR bassist Casey "Beefcake The Mighty" Orr, who shared that Varga "passed peacefully, his beloved wife Bambi holding his hand." Orr eulogized him as "one of a kind" and a legend whose tales would continue.
While not an original musician, Chuck Varga's contribution to GWAR was immeasurable as a founding member of Slave Pit Inc.
This creative collective was responsible for designing the band's infamous onstage costumes, elaborate artwork, and overall aesthetic.
Varga is specifically credited with helping to create the distinctive costume for singer Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie, among many other character designs that defined GWAR's unique universe.
Varga truly embodied the band's theatricality when he assumed the onstage persona of "the Sexecutioner" in 1987. For over a decade, he brought the character to life in concerts, even lending his powerful vocals to the track named after his character, "Sexecutioner." He also took lead vocals on "RagNaRok," the title track from GWAR's 1995 album.
Even after stepping down as a full-time performing member, Varga remained a crucial part of the GWAR orbit, making occasional stage appearances and continuing to contribute to the band's distinctive visual identity.
The impact of Chuck Varga's artistic genius was profound and lasting. Bob "Bone Snapper" Gorman, another integral member of GWAR and Slave Pit, underscored Varga's "enormous" contributions.
Gorman noted that
the influence of his illustrations, character designs, performances, and artistic vision can still be felt throughout GWAR today.
Varga's "over-the-top underground art aesthetic" was celebrated for defining an entire universe and inspiring generations of artists and fans worldwide. His legacy, as Gorman aptly put it, "will remain with us forever." Fans worldwide are raising a glass, remembering a man whose creativity helped forge one of metal's most unforgettable spectacles.
